Westgate Community Conservancy
Home to up to 500 endangered Grevy’s zebras
The Westgate Community Conservancy in Samburu County, which is part of the Northern Rangelands Trust, was founded in 2004 as an outgrowth of the Ngutuk Ongiron Group Ranch. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s because establishing a conservancy is a lengthy and ongoing process, so the term “formed” does not always imply “up and running.” The conservancy is bounded to the south by Samburu Game Reserve, to the East by Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy, to the north by Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, and to the west by the Ewaso Nyiro River. It is home to up to 500 endangered Grevy’s zebras and serves as a corridor for elephants migrating between the Matthews Ranges and Laikipia.
