Soysambu Conservancy
Home to over 450 bird species
Soysambu Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that conserves the Soysambu Estate as a natural wildlife habitat and promotes coexistence between livestock and wildlife in harmony. It is located close to Lake Elmenteita, which forms part of the World Heritage Site “Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley”. The Conservancy is an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area and a Ramsar Convention Wetlands Site. It is an ecologically diverse conservancy, stretching 48,000 acres and offering a blend of natural habitats that support a wide variety of wildlife.
It is important, with over 450 bird species found here making it a spot for birdwatchers and conservationists to visit. This includes a population of 28 percent of the world’s Lesser Flamingos, a marvelous sight. Soysambu Conservancy also acts as a home for over 10,000 mammals representing over 50 species. These mammals include the endangered Rothschild giraffes, of which there are over 90.
This, in turn, has put much pressure on the conservancy to strike a balance between the sustainability of wildlife and livestock management and the livelihood of the communities. In advocating for land use and the conservation of wildlife, Soysambu secures its rich biodiversity and provides a source of income in the local economy, maintaining a haven that will persist for future generations of wildlife and people alike.
Soysambu Conservancy is a model for conservation and biodiversity, showing that human activity can coexist with nature, hence setting a benchmark for sustainable development and environmental protection in one of the most important ecological regions of the world.
