Shompole Conservancy
Major wildlife corridor between Amboseli and the Masai Mara
The Shompole Conservancy provides a haven for wildlife in the heart of Southern Maasailand, offering an important corridor between the iconic Amboseli National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve. Almost equidistant from the two, this diverse ecosystem thrives in the harsh, arid environment, drawing water from the Ewaso Ng’iro River. It flows from the Mau Highlands, sustaining the region’s wildlife, local communities, and livestock. The list of species is long at Shompole, notwithstanding the arid landscape; “Big Five” minus rhinos, large mammals, reptiles, and a host of bird species set amidst a truly unique and untouched environment.
One of the most striking features of Shompole is its ownership and management by the Maasai people. But then Shompole is a conservancy and not a traditional game park, so it isn’t touristy at all, making for a rather very intimate wildlife experience. The best experience, of course, is outside the confines of the vehicles and one where few places provide contact with the land and its animals. There is no strict schedule, neither are there rules-one is free to do all this at one’s own time and pace, so long as respect is paid to the ecosystem and its custodians, the Maasai.
At the Shompole Conservancy, one does not only find wildlife but also, naturally, the way of living a life in harmony with that created the Maasai culture. It is a venue that allows the majestic wildlife of its land to roam freely where visitors can enjoy the diverse vistas and tranquility of this part of Southern Maasailand. Whether you get out into the landscape on foot or simply take the sights and sounds of this wild, Shompole offers a truly unique experience.
