Cheetahs possess a unique vocal prowess that distinguishes them from their roaring relatives. Even though they fall under the category of big cats, they do not belong to the Panthera genus like lions, tigers, and leopards renowned for their roaring capabilities. Instead, cheetahs showcase vocal behaviors akin to smaller cats by engaging in activities like purring, meowing, and chirping. This distinctive chirping sound sets them apart from lions and has captivated both scientists and wildlife enthusiasts.
The secret behind the cheetah’s chirp lies in its physical structure. Like domestic cats, a cheetah’s larynx connects to its trachea through a bone close to the skull. When a cheetah vocalizes, opening its mouth triggers vibrations in the vocal cords, resulting in a unique chirping sound. In contrast, members of the Panthera genus like lions have a different larynx structure. Cartilage links their vocal cords, enabling them to elongate and intensify sounds leading to their iconic roars. This anatomical contrast explains why lions can roar but cannot chirp or purr like cheetahs.
Chirping serves various purposes for cheetahs including signaling distress or isolation when in danger. During mating season, female cheetahs chirp to attract potential partners while also using it as a means of communication with their cubs. A mother cheetah’s chirp acts as a call for her cubs hidden or lost in the savanna indicating safety or mealtime prompting them to come out or eat. Moreover, among cheetah siblings, chirping is utilized for staying connected or reuniting after separation.
Interestingly enough, the chirps of young cheetah cubs bear resemblance to bird calls which scientists speculate aids them in avoiding detection by predators like lions and hyenas. By mimicking birds through their calls during early vulnerable weeks without maternal protection; they reduce attracting potentially threatening larger predators safeguarding themselves better during this critical period.
