From USD 80 per person sharing

Whether you are in Nairobi for a short stay, a business trip, or as part of a longer Kenyan safari, adding a Nairobi tea farm day trip with lunch at Kiambethu to your itinerary is an excellent choice. It requires no overnight stay, offers a chance to see Kenya’s highlands, and provides an enriching experience that is both relaxing and educational.

Only a short drive from the city, Kiambethu Farm manages to transport you to another world—one where history, nature, and hospitality blend seamlessly. By the time you return to Nairobi in the evening, you will carry with you not only the taste of fine Kenyan tea but also the memory of a day beautifully spent in the heart of Limuru’s countryside.

A Historic Home of Kenyan Tea

Kiambethu Farm has an extraordinary legacy dating back over a century. The farm was first purchased by AB McDonell in 1910, an English settler who became the very first person to grow, produce, and sell tea commercially in Kenya. Today, tea is one of Kenya’s leading exports and a drink enjoyed worldwide—but it all began here in Limuru at Kiambethu.

For more than five generations, the farm has remained in the family, and it is now lovingly run by McDonell’s granddaughter, Fiona Vernon. Visitors are welcomed into the farmhouse as if they were personal guests, enjoying both the hospitality and the fascinating stories of how Kenya’s tea industry began. The house itself is surrounded by well-kept gardens, acres of emerald tea plantations, and natural forests alive with wildlife, offering the perfect backdrop for a peaceful countryside retreat.

Why Choose Kiambethu for a Day Trip

A visit to Kiambethu Farm is more than just a scenic excursion; it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in history and learn about a side of Kenya that many travelers never experience. The highlights of the trip include:

  • Tasting freshly brewed farm tea right where it was grown.

  • Guided tours of the tea plantation, with explanations on how tea is cultivated, harvested, and processed.

  • Learning about the farm’s history, the role it played in shaping Kenya’s tea industry, and the personal story of the McDonell family.

  • Walking through the indigenous forest, where a knowledgeable local guide points out plants, trees, and their traditional uses in Kenyan culture.

  • Wildlife encounters, with the chance to see colobus monkeys, colorful bird species, and unique flora.

  • A leisurely gourmet lunch served on the veranda with sweeping views of the Ngong Hills and tea fields.

For visitors who want an enriching, relaxed, and memorable experience, Kiambethu Farm truly stands out.

The Day Trip Itinerary

Morning Pick-Up from Nairobi

Your day begins when a driver collects you from your Nairobi hotel or residence at 9:45 am. The scenic drive toward Limuru Road takes you away from the bustle of the capital, passing local markets, rolling hills, and eventually the vast green tea fields that dominate the highlands. By the time you reach Kiambethu Farm at 11:00 am, you will already feel the shift in pace—from the busy city to the calm of the countryside.

Warm Welcome and History Talk

On arrival, you are greeted with a cup of freshly brewed Kenyan tea or coffee—an immediate taste of what the farm is known for. The visit begins with an informal talk about the history of Kiambethu, the pioneering work of AB McDonell, and how tea cultivation developed in Kenya. Fiona and her team explain the full tea-making process, from the planting of seedlings to plucking the tender leaves and preparing them for market.

Tour of the Tea Farm

After learning the history, you will be guided on a walk through the farm itself. Acres of neatly lined tea bushes stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a stunning green landscape. The guide explains how the tea is carefully tended and harvested by hand, a tradition that continues to this day. Visitors have the chance to see tea pickers at work and to understand the balance of skill and patience required in producing Kenya’s world-class tea.

Indigenous Forest Walk

From the open tea fields, the tour transitions into the shaded paths of the farm’s indigenous forest. Here, you are accompanied by a local Kenyan guide who shares deep knowledge of the plants and trees. Many of these have been used traditionally for medicine, food, or rituals, and the guide explains their cultural significance.

As you stroll, you may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, an iconic sight in the forest canopy, as well as numerous bird species fluttering among the trees. The forest is also rich with vibrant flowers, adding bursts of color to the serene green backdrop.

Pre-Lunch Drinks on the Veranda

After the walk, you return to the farmhouse and are invited to relax on the veranda. With a refreshing drink in hand, you can soak in the sweeping views of the tea fields stretching to the distant Ngong Hills. This pause is not just about the view but also about savoring the tranquil atmosphere of the countryside—a sharp contrast to Nairobi’s urban rhythm.

Farm-to-Table Lunch

One of the highlights of the Nairobi tea farm day trip with lunch at Kiambethu is, without doubt, the meal itself. A delicious three-course buffet lunch is served, prepared with ingredients sourced directly from the farm’s garden. The menu changes seasonally but always emphasizes fresh, local flavors.

Starters are light and refreshing, followed by a hearty main course that often includes fresh vegetables and locally inspired dishes. Desserts are a special treat, often accompanied by fresh cream from the farm’s herd of Channel Island cows. The farm’s emphasis on homegrown produce makes this a truly authentic farm-to-table dining experience.

Afternoon Departure

After lunch, guests are welcome to take one more stroll through the gardens or simply relax in the quiet of the farmhouse. By mid-afternoon, the driver will be ready to return you to Nairobi, dropping you off at your hotel or residence in the late afternoon. It is a full day experience, yet one that feels unhurried and deeply satisfying.

What Makes This Experience Unique

Unlike many tourist attractions, Kiambethu Farm offers an intimate, authentic experience that blends culture, history, and nature. It is not a crowded spot but rather a welcoming home where visitors are treated like friends. The personal storytelling, the direct connection to Kenya’s tea heritage, and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Limuru make this day trip stand apart.

For travelers interested in history, it provides a living connection to colonial Kenya and the birth of one of the country’s most important industries. For nature lovers, it offers peaceful walks in tea fields and forests rich in wildlife. And for food enthusiasts, the farm-to-table lunch is a culinary highlight.

What our clients say about us

Kenya Wild Parks Really Knows How to Create the Perfect Kenyan Holiday!

From the very first conversation with Erick, we knew a truly bespoke trip was being crafted for us. Within an hour of submitting our online booking form, I received a detailed draft itinerary filled with suggestions for destinations and activities tailored to our interests. We were traveling with our two grown children and their partners, each arriving from different parts of the country. Despite the complexity, everything went smoothly from the start. Upon arrival, we were warmly received by Erick and Collins for a meet and greet. Erick gave us a thorough briefing on what to expect during our journey. Our adventure began with a flight to Lewa, where we spent three incredible nights, an unforgettable experience. From there, we flew to Amboseli, staying at Angama Amboseli, which exceeded every expectation. The accommodation was truly 5-star in every sense; we only wished we could have stayed longer! Next, we flew to Angama Mara, another world-class stay. The Mara never disappoints, and this visit met our highest standards. Erick stayed in touch throughout our trip, checking in regularly to ensure everything was running perfectly—a gesture we greatly appreciated, especially as seasoned travelers. This was a bucket-list trip that far exceeded our greatest expectations. While it seemed expensive at first, we can confidently say it was worth every penny.

A well organized personal trip to Kenya

The service we received from Kenya Wild Parks was excellent. Working with Erick made everything completely stress-free, he carefully laid out each step, including the timing, to ensure smooth planning. He handled all our bookings, from the lodges (one recommended by friends and another he suggested) to flights, transfers, and even small details like extra day trips, immunizations, packing tips, and tipping guidelines. Their website is comprehensive and very user-friendly, making the process even easier. Whenever we had additional questions - especially as our departure neared - Erick responded promptly and thoroughly, no matter how minor our query was. We’ll definitely be using Kenya Wild Parks again in the future!

Lasting Memories – Safari in Kenya

Collins was absolutely wonderful to work with. From the very start of planning until the moment we returned home, he communicated with us every step of the way. All of our questions were answered quickly, and we felt well-prepared for everything. He also gave us great recommendations on some of the best places to shop during our downtime in Nairobi. Thanks to Collins, and all the team at Kenya Wild Parks our safari was seamless and truly unforgettable.

Holiday of a lifetime.

Holiday of a lifetime. We were in Kenya for just 4 full days, but Erick & the team at Kenya Wild parks ensured the agenda was full & extremely memorable: the team accompanied us through full planning of internal flights & transfers, camp booking, and final day in nairobi with excursions & restaurants included. The partner lodge, Entim Mara was spectacular. The lodge is located within the masai reserve, meaning wildlife (hippos, elephants, giraffes, monkeys …) at our doorstep, and the feeling that the safari never ended. Food, comfort & hospitality also all 5*. Game drives were fantastic: from the moment of getting off the plane & drive to the lodge, we were already met with such a variety of wildlife. What we appreciated most was that we had both a driver and a scout. Both very experienced and able to read the signals of wildlife rather than following vehicles, meaning that we were able to see some spectacular events such as a Lion kill, with no other cars around us. Thank you for a special holiday.

Personalized, Stress-Free, and Unforgettable

I felt like Kenya Wild Parks was with me every step of the way. Erick prepared me so well for what to expect and took the time to understand what mattered most to me. Their detailed itinerary made me feel like I already ‘knew’ each place before I arrived. With seamless transportation and knowledgeable guides, everything was effortless. At first, I was a bit skeptical about direct booking and even considered going through a U.S. agency. But the expertise and personal touch from Kenya Wild Parks made all the difference. Erick’s availability and quick responses to all our questions gave me complete confidence. I’m already excited to book with them again!
