Nairobi: Tea Farm Day Trip with Lunch at Kiambethu
From USD 80 per person sharing
Just a short drive from the heart of Nairobi, Kiambethu Farm at Limuru offers a peaceful insight into life on a settler farm. Lying at 7,200 ft., Kiambethu was purchased and farmed by AB McDonell in 1910. He was the first person to grow, make, and sell tea commercially in Kenya – now one of Kenya’s biggest exports. It has been a home to five generations and is currently being run by his granddaughter Fiona Vernon. The farmhouse is set in beautiful gardens surrounded by acres of tea and indigenous forest, home to the Colobus monkey and plenty of other wildlife.
Itinerary Highlights:
1. Taste delicious locally grown tea on the farm where it was grown
2. Take a tour of the tea farm and learn how it is grown and harvested
3. Take a full tour of the farm and learn the farm’s history
4. Historic tea plantation on a site including gardens & Indigenous forest

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel at 9:45 am and head towards Limuru Road, which is approximately 30km from Nairobi to Kiambethu Tea Farm. You arrive at 11 am, and you will be offered a cup of tea or coffee. The history of the farm and the tea-making process is informally explained, and then an opportunity to see tea on the farm is provided. You will later take a walk in the indigenous forest accompanied by our resident Kenyan guide, who identifies the plants and explains how they are traditionally used. Look out for Colobus monkeys up close, which is home to various birds and flowers.
Later, return to the house to enjoy a pre-lunch drink on the veranda with sweeping views across the tea fields of the Ngong Hills. Relax and enjoy a three-course buffet lunch from the farm’s set menu prepared from the garden; desserts are topped with cream from our herd of Channel Island cows. You will later be dropped off at your hotel or residence in Nairobi.
