Satao Elerai Conservancy
A major wildlife corridor
Satao Elerai Conservancy is a 5,000-acre private conservation reserve just 10 kilometers south of Amboseli National Park, at the foot of Africa’s iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. It is very important in connecting the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve in Tanzania to Amboseli National Park, thus facilitating the movement of wildlife between these protected areas, situated in the Kitenden Corridor, an important wildlife passageway. This is under lease from the Elerai Maasai community development that will see not only a collaboration but also shared benefits both for the people and the region in terms of conservation.
This conservancy forms part of a greater endeavor the African Wildlife Foundation leads in an attempt to secure essential wildlife corridors for elephant, lion, and cheetah dispersal across a mosaic of protected areas. The varied landscapes, including portions of semi-arid savannah to wetland, offer enormous sections of flora and fauna of different kinds within Satao Elerai. Such ecological variation supports large herbivores and smaller species alike, indicating that conservancy has proved an important haven regarding biodiversity.
Besides its environmental significance, it provides rare eco-tourism events in which the visitor gets to appreciate the beauty of wild game in their natural environment. The Satao Elerai Conservancy indeed sets a prime example whereby successful conservation has helped protect wildlife corridors and benefited the local communities simultaneously. With its breathtaking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and varied wildlife, the conservancy acts as a testament to how important it will be that future generations preserve critical landscapes.
