Enonkishu Conservancy
A pastoralist family cooperative on the outskirts of the Mara Ecosystem
Enonkishu Conservancy is a cooperative of pastoralist families from an area of 6,000 acres on the fringes of Kenya’s iconic Mara Ecosystem. This rare conservancy is built upon investment in sustainable rangeland management: finding that important balance between cattle and wildlife concerning space for ecological coexistence within the Mara Ecosystem. Advanced cattle breeding, husbandry, and grazing practices are promoted, placing Enonkishu at the forefront of maintaining cattle biodiversity for sustained livelihoods.
In this regard, predator-proof mobile bomas for livestock and the protection of the predators have been rolled out within the conservancy. These ingeniously designed enclosures hugely reduce lion retribution kills and allow the peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife. Thus, visitors to Enonkishu will experience a nice blend of livestock, a variety of wildlife, and an outstanding natural beauty destination without parallel in eco-tourism.
Enonkishu also hosts the Mara Training Centre, an education and capacity-building hub. The center offers specialized training in range management, social cohesion, governance, leadership, and profitable animal husbandry practices. Other conservation organizations, group ranches, and interested local communities also attend this center with an interest in adopting sustainable practices that benefit both people and the environment.
A commitment in its own right, Enonkishu Conservancy embodies conservation, community empowerment, and sustainable development. To that end, the Conservancy acts as a model to balance agricultural productivity with wildlife conservation in such a way that the Mara Ecosystem thrives far into the future.
