Kaluku Conservancy
An important buffer zone for Tsavo and its wildlife
The Kaluku Conservancy is found on 5,000 acres of virgin land, playing a vital buffer role to Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya’s flagship wildlife reserves. Bounded on either side by rivers Athi and Mtito, it has natural boundaries that have proved vital in the protection of the park’s ecosystem. This is in addition to Tsavo’s expansive wilderness, acting as a protected wildlife route, maintaining two sensitive river systems key to the maintenance of biodiversity within the region.
The Conservancy has been very instrumental in the conservation of wildlife, especially orphan animals. Most of the young animals from different species rescued by the effort of the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Conservancy’s active veterinary teams find refuge here. These animals, sometimes victims of poaching or human-wildlife conflict, are put under the care of Kaluku up to the time they are strong enough and grow up to return to their natural habitats.
Apart from being a haven, Kaluku epitomizes hope and perseverance in the fragile ecosystem of the region. It means that the future generation will have the privilege to view Tsavo’s landscapes and teeming wildlife thriving in their natural environment.
